What to Expect During Recovery From Post-Weight Loss Plastic Surgery

Nurse assisting a woman with a walker during hospital recovery. After major weight loss, you may be ready to take the next step and remove loose skin. Surgery can help reshape your body and improve your comfort, but the recovery process is just as important as the procedure itself.

Dr. York Yates is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Layton, Utah, with years of experience in body contouring procedures like tummy tucks, body lifts, and arm lifts. He will make sure you understand what recovery really involves so you know what to expect.

The First Week After Surgery

The first few days after weight loss body contouring surgery are all about resting. You’ll likely feel sore, swollen, and tight in the areas that were treated, which is completely normal.

Most people head home the same day, but you’ll need someone to help you get around. Before your procedure, make sure your space at home is ready by stocking up on easy meals and setting up a spot where you can rest. You’ll be glad you did!

You’ll also be wearing a compression garment to support your body. Dr. Yates often uses a no-intubation anesthesia technique, which may help you feel more alert and comfortable sooner after surgery.

Weeks Two Through Six

By the second week, you should be moving around a little easier and starting to feel more like yourself. Even so, this is still very much a recovery phase. Avoid heavy lifting, intense workouts, or anything that strains your body for now.

Swelling will gradually go down, and you’ll check in with Dr. Yates for follow-up visits to make sure everything is healing as it should. Depending on your procedure and how you’re feeling, you might be cleared to ease back into light chores or desk work.

Most people return to their usual daily routines within four to six weeks, but full clearance for exercise or lifting can take longer.

Scars and Long-Term Healing

Scars will fade over time, but they won’t disappear completely. You can expect to see your final results in three to six months, once all swelling has subsided.

Dr. Yates may recommend topical scar treatments or silicone sheets as part of your recovery plan.
