Tummy Tucks: What You Need To Know

After any surgery, following your doctor’s orders and getting as much rest as possible is crucial. This is especially true for tummy tuck surgery, a major surgery. Recovery from a tummy tuck can take several weeks, but the first 24 hours are the most important.

This article will examine what a tummy tuck is, what to expect, and what happens afterward.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck involves removing excess fat and skin from the abdomen and tightening the abdominal muscles. This procedure is equally effective for both men and women, and often goes along with other procedures like liposuction.

The Procedure

Most tummy tucks take place under general anesthesia although we more commonly use a modification of general anesthesia called TIVA which we prefer for safety and patient experience. In surgery, a plastic surgeon separates the skin from underlying tissue during the procedure by an incision in the lower abdomen. The abdominal wall muscles will then tighten after the doctor removes excess fat and skin. The incision will be sutured with internal sutures that don’t leave suture marks at the end of the procedure.

After the Procedure: What to Expect

After a tummy tuck, you will need to take it easy for a few days. You may have drains to remove any excess fluid from the surgery site, although most of our patients are drainless.   It is crucial to keep the drains clean and dry and to empty them as often as your surgeon tells you to. You will also need to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and support your abdomen.

The First Day

The recovery room will be your temporary home after having a tummy tuck. Once you are awake and alert, you can go home. You will need someone to drive you home, as you will not be able to drive yourself.

The First Week

You must take it easy during the first week after your tummy tuck. Drains should be kept clean, dry, and emptied as directed by your surgeon.  You will also need to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and support your abdomen.
