If you are considering liposuction in Layton or Salt Lake City, the amount of fat is only part of the picture. How your tissue responds afterward also matters. At Dr. York Yates Plastic Surgery, our team evaluates fat distribution and skin laxity together when deciding whether liposuction alone is likely to match your goals. Our surgeon, Dr. York Yates, is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has more than two decades of experience in cosmetic breast and body surgery.
What Does Skin Elasticity Mean After Liposuction?
Skin elasticity refers to how well the tissue can contract and settle after the layer of fat beneath it is reduced. Liposuction reshapes fat, but it does not remove a significant amount of loose tissue. When elasticity is good, the treated area has a better chance of conforming to the slimmer contour underneath.
This is especially relevant in the abdomen. For abdominal liposuction, good candidates generally have localized fat with relatively little loose skin or stretch marking. If laxity is already noticeable, reducing the volume underneath it may make that looseness easier to see.
What Can Affect Skin Elasticity?
Age, pregnancy, major weight changes, stretch marks, and your starting degree of laxity can all influence how the tissues respond after fat removal. These factors do not automatically rule out liposuction, but they can change what the procedure can accomplish.
You may also have firmer tissue in one area and more looseness in another. That is why we assess each treatment area separately rather than assuming the same approach will work everywhere.
Compression garments are commonly part of liposuction recovery because they can help manage swelling and support the tissues as they settle. They cannot, however, remove excess skin or correct significant laxity.
When Might Liposuction Alone Fall Short?
If the abdomen has substantial loose skin or muscle separation, a tummy tuck may be a better fit because it can remove excess skin and repair the abdominal wall when needed. After major weight loss, broader areas of laxity may call for post-weight-loss body contouring rather than fat removal alone.
Our liposuction gallery can also help you see how starting anatomy and treatment area influence results. Photos add context, but an in-person evaluation helps us determine whether liposuction, skin removal, or a combination makes more sense.
