Burn Fat and Build Muscle

EMSCULPT® is the first and only procedure that is FDA-Approved to build muscle with an additional benefit of fat reduction. It is indicated for muscle building and toning of the abs, buttocks, arms, and thighs of both men and women. It is the world’s first non-invasive buttock shaping and lifting procedure. We are excited to add this fantastic new category of technology to our body contouring practice. This is a game-changer in body contour procedures.

How does Emsculpt work?

EMSCULPT uses HiFEM (High-Intensity Focused ElectroMagnetic) Energy to stimulate muscle growth and burn fat. The electromagnetic energy is similar to technology found in an MRI. This powerful energy results in rapid supra-maximal muscle contraction, more powerful than could be accomplished with even the most intense exercise. One 30 minute session results in approximately 20,000 muscle contractions, similar to 20,000 sit-ups. The muscles respond by burning fat and adding bulk and tone.

Does it work?

At Dr. Yates Plastic Surgery, we won’t offer a procedure unless it has been vetted by Dr. Yates personally. Always a skeptic, Dr. Yates offered CoolSculpting and MiraDry only after receiving the procedures himself. The same is true of Emsculpt.  Studies demonstrate a 16% increase in muscle mass on average. It has excellent patient satisfaction with a current 88% “worth it” rating on RealSelf.

Is it “Emsculpting” or just “Emsculpt”?

Many people, including Kim Kardashian, are confusing the name with Emsculpting. Probably as a result of CoolSculpting becoming a household name brand.

Speaking of Kim Kardashian, have any other celebrities used and endorsed Emsculpt?

Screen Shot 2019 09 23 at 9.43.07 PM

Kim Kardashian was recently seen on television getting an Emsculpt treatment. The equivalence of 20,000 situps in 30 minutes without breaking a sweat. Is it cheating or just good time management?

If Emsculpt builds muscle, why not just go to the gym?

Anyone with the time and dedication to achieve their muscle-building goals at the gym would be encouraged to do so. The contractions caused by Emsculpt are not “normal” or physiologic. The contractions are stronger than could ever be achieved through normal muscle activation through exercise. This results in hypertrophy beyond what would be achievable with exercise.

Emsculpt is a time-saving shortcut to help achieve or exceed your goals while saving hours spent at the gym for other activities. It is also a great option to kick-start an exercise routine for those who struggle with motivation.

What are the benefits of Emsculpt?

What are the benefits of doing 20,000 situps? If you ever could do that many, how about doing them in 30 minutes? Now that would provide a serious muscle-building workout. That’s Emsculpt. Some would say it’s “cheating” to strengthen and define your muscles on your abdomen, arms, or calves with Emsculpt. Or to lift your bottom without surgical enhancement. Really? It sounds like a great way to use your time. Thirty minutes of Emsculpt equals countless hours at the gym. Dr. Yates’ patients gladly take that tradeoff in time spent.

Fact is, Emsculpt is FDA-approved and safe. It’s a great way to feel great about the definition and contours of your body.

Who is a candidate for Emsculpt?

Emsculpt is intended for patients with a BMI of 25 or less. Patients should be in relatively good shape and seek a toned improvement in muscle size and definition. On the buttocks, good candidates should want a non-surgical lifting. People with implanted devices, such as pacemakers, are not candidates as the electromagnetic energy can interfere with the device.

How long is the treatment time?

The treatment time for each treatment is 30 minutes. It is recommended that four treatments are scheduled within a 2-4 week period.

What results should I expect after Emsculpt?

The Emsculpt is a series of four 30-minute procedures over two weeks. Although you will notice an improvement in strength with each procedure, there is continued improvement for several weeks after completion. Emsculpt gives results you “feel” and results you “see.” The results you “feel” are unlike anything else in cosmetic surgery. Many patients describe the core strengthening as the “fountain of youth.”

Are Emsculpt results better in patients with less fat?

The results you “see” are most noticeable in thin patients with better muscle visibility. The results you “feel” are similar in either the low or high BMI patient. We would consider low BMI patients the best candidates as they will typically be happiest with the results.

What is the procedure like?

When you come into our Layton offices you’ll simply lie on one of our examining tables. We apply the two Emsculpt panels to your chosen treatment area. On the buttocks, one panel will be placed on each cheek. The panels deliver the high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy down onto the treatment area. The magnetic energy creates “supramaximal” muscle contraction that is so far beyond what you can achieve at the gym it’s crazy. That’s right, a single session creates the same muscle contractions that it would take 20,000 sit-ups to achieve. All in just 30 minutes! These muscle contractions build new muscle mass and tone the entire treatment area.

Do Emsculpt results last forever?

Unlike traditional exercise, you will continue to build muscle for several weeks after the procedure. The results would not be expected to be permanent. Maintenance treatments are recommended every 2-6 months, depending on your goals. In this way, Emsculpt is similar to Botox.

Are diet and exercise necessary after treatment?

diet exercise

Many patients find the increase in core and muscle strength after Emsculpt motivates them to exercise. Exercise becomes easier, less painful, and more enjoyable. As one would expect, patients who add diet and exercise to Emsculpt are going to achieve the best results.

Can Emsculpt be combined with CoolSculpting?

Emsculpt and CoolSculpting treat different areas on the body. CoolSculpting is an excellent option for stubborn fat, whereas Emsculpt primarily works on the level of the muscle. In this way, they are complementary procedures when used on the same body area. Coolsculpting decreases fat so you can best “see” the results of Emsculpt. Remember, no matter how toned your muscles are if you have a thick layer of fat covering them the definition will not be as noticeable.

Can Emsculpt be combined with a tummy tuck?

During a tummy tuck, the abdominal muscles are brought together to help flatten the abdomen. Emsculpt added to the tummy tuck will tone and strengthen the abdominal muscles to achieve further flattening, tightening, and contour. It is a complementary procedure to a tummy tuck; we recommend a series of four treatments before the tummy tuck and two additional treatments two months after. The price of Emsculpt for our tummy tuck patients can be discount bundled into the tummy tuck costs.

Can Emsculpt repair Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis Recti is the separation of the rectus abdominus muscles that occurs with pregnancy. This separation recovers after delivery to different degrees for different women. Rectus diastasis can contribute to an abdominal “pooch” as well as weak core strength and back pains. For women with substantial separation, the only method of treatment has traditionally been direct surgical repair during a tummy tuck. Emsculpt is a new category of treatment that works to add strength and tone to the rectus muscles. It has been shown to significantly improve diastasis recti, although not to the degree expected by a tummy tuck.

Can Emsculpt be combined with a BBL for more fullness?

BBL is a procedure to add firmness, roundness, and size to the buttock, lifting and improving the skin. During BBL, fat is harvested from unwanted areas and injected into the fatty tissue in the buttock. Emsculpt can be complimentary to BBL by adding additional muscle bulk and tone. If it is performed before BBL, it can add additional muscle bulk, lift, and firmness to the procedure.

Can Emsculpt replace BBL?

Emsculpt can also be used as a stand-alone procedure on the buttock for patients who want more subtle results. It is the first and only completely non-invasive buttock augmentation, lifting and tightening procedure.

Is Emsculpt painful?

An Emsculpt treatment at York Yates Plastic Surgery isn’t painful – it simply feels like a series of strong muscle contractions. We can adjust the percentage of your treatment based on your comfort. At first, the sensations definitely feel a little different, but then your body adapts to the contractions and the procedure is easily tolerated.

What is the recovery like after Emsculpt?

During the procedure, there is a little discomfort from the intense muscle contractions. Many patients report it is a “good” kind of pain. After the procedure, there is virtually NO downtime. It may feel like you just had a good workout, but the muscles don’t hurt. There are no physical restrictions after the procedure.

Are there any side effects with Emsculpt?

The FDA has approved Emsculpt for body contouring. Because Emsculpt simply triggers muscle contractions, just as you would with exercise, there aren’t any risks or side effects. Yes, 20,000 sit-ups, about what a typical session equals, isn’t a naturally attainable number, but Emsculpt has been proven to have no side effects. Patients can have some mild muscle soreness, as you would have after a typical workout, but that’s it. And you can immediately go back to work or your normal activities after your Emsculpt session.
