Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty Photos (before and after)

Rhinoplasty (nose job) is facial plastic surgery involving nose reshaping.

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is performed for both cosmetic and functional reasons. Features that can be improved with rhinoplasty include the size, shape and projection of the nose. Rhinoplasty can straighten a crooked nose.  Breathing problems resulting from nasal trauma, septal deviation or airway collapse can also be improved with nose reshaping surgery.  In lay terms this is often referred to as a “nose job”. The best candidates for nose reshaping rhinoplasty have specific nasal deformities for which they desire improvement. A hump on the bridge of the nose, crooked nose, wide nose or drooping tip are common examples of these deformities.

Is there a way to visualize my results before surgery?

We have recently added an excellent tool for simulating the results of rhinoplasty. A 3D image is taken which Dr. Yates and the patient can simulate the postoperative changes desired. This is quite valuable for communication to help both  the patient and surgeon get on the same page about the changes desired.  The patient can see how the “new” nose may look on his/ her face.

It is important to understand that the modified image is only an estimation of what can be accomplished, actual results can vary and there are no guarantees of outcomes based on these images.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

The procedure can be performed through small incisions within the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) with or without a small incision on the skin of the nose between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty), as necessary. The bone and cartilage framework of the nose is removed or reshaped as needed. Occasionally additional cartilage is taken from the septum of the nose or behind the ear to provide additional framework.  Rhinoplasty can be performed under general anesthesia or under sedation with local anesthesia.  Rhinoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you will go home after the procedure.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The fees associated with rhinoplasty include 1) surgeon’s fees, 2) anesthesia fees, and 3) facility fees.  As Dr Yates has an in-office operating suite, the facility fee is minimal.  This is a cost savings directly to the patient.  For a list of the costs of common procedures performed by Dr. Yates click here.

What should I expect after rhinoplasty?

You will have a small dressing on the nose and possibly packing inside the nose. Pain medications and antibiotics will be provided. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes can be significant for the first several days. Ice packs and head elevation will be used for the first two days to improve pain and swelling. Most swelling is resolved by the first six weeks although a small amount will be present for over a year. Packing will be removed in a couple of days, sutures will be removed at 4-7 days and the dressing will be removed at about 2 weeks. To avoid injury, strenuous activities and contact sports should be avoided for several weeks after surgery.
