Breast augmentation is more popular in Salt Lake City, Utah than any other city. This, according to data from Realself.com, a popular plastic surgery website. They reviewed geographical data from millions of searches on realself.com. They found that Salt Lake City had a much higher interest in breast implants than any other city, (+74% higher than the expected search volume). The cities with the next highest interest in breast augmentation were Fresno (+63% vs. national average), Honolulu (+54), Oklahoma City (+50), and Mobile (+34).

This is certainly consistent with what I am seeing in my practice. This has a lot to do with the general “mommy makeover” trend in Utah. Utah women are having babies at a young age and simply want their bodies back.

Why pop a perfectly good breast implant?

A woman in her 40′s or 50′s presents to her plastic surgeon to discuss breast implant removal. She had saline breast implants placed 20 or so years ago. Since that time she has gained a little weight and breast tissue and now feels that her breasts are too large.

She doesn’t remember the size of the implants. She doesn’t, of course, want floppy breasts after the implants come out.

Her plastic surgeon is not sure if the patient will be happy with the size or shape of the breasts after implant removal. The patient is unsure whether she would like a lift or need to have smaller implants replaced.

Here’s an excellent option. Pop the implants!

Simple needle decompression in the office can allow the patient to see the results of implant removal and make an educated decision regarding the need for smaller implants or a lift. Of course, this commits a patient to have the implants removed at the very least. This is not an option for silicone implants, only saline.

New silicone breast implant size options now available

The Mentor corporation has announced more options in their already excellent selection of memory gel silicone implants.

Smooth round memory gel implants by Mentor are my current preferred choice for silicone implants. I received a fax from the company yesterday that they have manufactured eight new size options. Two of these are in high profile implants 475 cc and 750 cc. Four of these are in a moderate plus profile 425 cc, 475 cc, 525 cc, 575 cc, 650 cc and 750 cc.

As opposed to saline implants, silicone implant come pre-filled. Previously silicone implants came in 25 cc intervals starting at 100 cc to 450 cc in high profile and 400 cc in moderate plus profile. Above that, the implants came in 50 cc intervals to 700 cc. This meant that for patients choosing implants above 400 cc they would have to jump up considerably to the next size. These new implants fill in some of the gaps giving patients and plastic surgeons more options. Good job Mentor, but what took so long.
