Blepharoplasty (Eyelid) Overview - Frequently Asked Questions - Before & After Photos Back to Top It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. At a minimum, the eyes are a focal point of the face, expressing emotion and youthfulness. As people age, the skin, muscle and soft tissue around the eyelids stretch and fat becomes more prominent causing "bags" that can express a tired, aged appearance. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that can rejuvenate the eyelids, eliminating excess skin and bags while reshaping sagging eyelids. It does not remove dark circles around the eyes or crow's feet. It can be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as face lift or brow lift. Back to Top Does insurance ever pay for blepharoplasty? Occasionally, drooping upper lids can cause functional problems with vision; alternatively, displaced lower lids can contribute to excessive tearing or corneal drying. If these functional problems are documented by an eye doctor insurance may cover eyelid surgery. Where is the procedure performed? Blepharoplasty can be performed under either general or local anesthesia, most patients choose the latter for financial reasons. The procedure is generally performed in the office operating room with or without IV sedation and takes one to two hours. The incisions follow the natural creases of the eyelids. A minor brow lift or midface elevation can be made through these same incisions to further accentuate the results. What should I expect after surgery? Small dressings will cover the incisions. Sutures will be left in place for 2-7 days. Cold compresses or ice will be placed for several days to limit swelling and bruising. You may experience temporary sensitivity to light or excessive tearing. How long should I expect to be off work after the procedure? For the first few days you will have mild to moderate pain which may require pain medications. After a day or two you will feel much better than you look. Moderate bruising and swelling will be present for approximately three weeks following surgery. What risks are associated with the surgery? Dr Yates will thoroughly discuss the rare but potential risks at the time of your consultation. These generally include; bleeding, scarring, infection, asymmetry, and unhappiness with cosmetic result. |
